Free radicals and oxidants are both toxic and beneficial compounds, since they can be harmful and helpful for the body. They are produced either from normal cell metabolisms within the body or from external sources (pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, medication).
When an overload of free radicals cannot gradually be destroyed, their accumulation in the body generates a phenomenon called oxidative stress. This process plays a major part in the development of chronic and degenerative illness such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
Damage to DNA as a result of free radical attack is called indirect DNA damage because the radicals formed can diffuse throughout the body and affect other organs.
How can we help?
The natural antioxidant in ionised water is the hydroxyl ion and these molecules are what gives ionized water its special antioxidant ionised water benefits. Like the best antioxidants, hydrogen ions neutralise the ability of free radicals causing damage, and thus prevent aging and disease when introduced properly to the body.
Hydration in Sports
The most important ingredient of the human body includes water. Water consists 60-65% of an adult’s body mass, 55% or less for women, while it reaches values of close to 75% in infants. A proper hydration state is a must for general health, yet it is even more important for individuals that exercise on a regular basis, and especially for competitive athletes submitted to extreme loads, often under extreme environmental conditions. There are sport disciplines for which fluid intake before, during and after competition is a key factor determining performance, and those that are not much affected by hydration status.
It has been hypothesised that drinking alkaline water could increase the buffering capacity of blood and muscle tissues and improve the hydration status of athletes. Since most biochemical reactions are very sensitive to pH, drinking alkaline water could facilitate most of these reactions and speed up post-exercise recovery.
Acid-base equilibrium within the body is tightly maintained through the interaction of three complementary mechanisms: Blood and tissue buffering systems (e.g., bicarbonate), the diffusion of carbon dioxide from the blood to the lungs via respiration, and the excretion of hydrogen ions from the blood to urine by the kidneys.

In another randomised test conducted on premenopausal women, regular consumption of ionised water caused a significant increase in bone density, increased urine pH and a decrease of parathyroid hormone and serum C-telopeptide. Other studies show that regularly drinking ionised water prevents diabetes and atherosclerosis by lowering blood concentration of glucose and HbA1c, as well as Triglycerides (TG), Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and Total Cholesterol (TCH). Some authors also indicate that drinking ionised water may slow down neurodegenerative processes.
If you take a multi-vitamins to support your health, you might be able to gain more from your supplements by taking them with ionised, alkaline water. It’s the same with herbal supplements. You can get ionised water to the pH level you set with a water ioniser at home. An alkaline water machine creates reverse osmosis water, or ionised water, that has smaller clusters than normal water.
This means that your body’s able to take in the refreshing benefits of the water in a quicker and easier way. This relates to supplements because taking them with ionised alkaline water can boost the absorption of that supplement by taking in the nutrient faster and more effectively. To gain this advantage, use the pH level you normally drink, which would have a pH range of 7.5 to 10.0.

Ionised to a higher pH level, studies show alkaline water is proven to hydrate faster than ordinary tap water: A 2016 study published in the International Society of Sports Nutrition, found that alkaline water gets into the blood much quicker than ordinary water – impressive stuff!
